Vitamin D and Melatonin
TLDR - Vitamin D and Melatonin function similarly and like a seesaw in response to the changing seasons. Longer summer days and increased sunlight raise Vitamin D production while decreasing Melatonin levels. Shorter winter days and extended darkness increases Melatonin production and lowers Vitamin D levels. We shouldn’t expect Vitamin D levels to be the same all year.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D is a hormone produced by our bodies in response to sunlight. During the summer months, when the days are longer and warmer, we spend more time outside. The increased sun exposure on our skin increases the production of Vitamin D.
Melatonin
Melatonin is one of the hormone that regulates our circadian rhythm. It is produced by the pineal gland in response to darkness. During the winter months, especially in northern latitudes, the days are shorter and the nights are longer. This leads to increased melatonin production.
Vitamin D Supplements in Winter
There is a common approach of taking Vitamin D supplements in winter. Instead of trying to maintain summer levels of Vitamin D year round, we should acknowledge that it’s natural for Vitamin D levels to decrease in winter and focus on melatonin production. Ways to embrace winter:
Embrace Natural Light Cycles: Spend time outdoors in natural light during the day, even in winter.
Limit Blue Light Exposure: In the evening, reduce exposure to blue light by avoiding screens, using incandescent or red lights, or wearing blue blockers.
Reduce EMFs: EMFs have been shown to disrupt melatonin production, similar to blue lights.
Prioritize Sleep: Establish a regular sleep routine and create a dark, cool, and quiet sleep environment.
